How to build ecologically?

Ecological awareness is increasing more and more. In the days of healthy lifestyle trend, many companies offer seemingly ecological solutions that are really very superficial. So what to do to build really ecologically?

Planning first and foremost

Building in harmony with nature is first and foremost the best use of what it gives us. Any waste is contrary to the ecology! It is best to choose a allotment, the potential of which you will be able to use the most, without destroying the environment. Placing a home among greenery is not enough. A place near the forest will be a much more ecological choice than a completely wooded lot, the construction where it will require cutting out a lot of trees.

If, in turn, we choose a plot with no trees, however, there is a lot of free space, it is worth planting more greenery. Trees produce oxygen and give you shade that you need in summer. It is also worth to opt for a garden, even covered only with grass, instead of concrete or other impermeable substrate. If the majority of the plot is covered with impermeable soil, the water will not be able to penetrate the soil. Instead, it will flow from our plot, accumulating in undesirable places.

Instead of spending a lot of money on exotic plant species, you can also use local plants that grow well in the place where you build your home. Most likely, you will not need to fertilize them, so less chemicals will penetrate the ground.

What to do with waste?

Construction without producing waste is impossible. But what to do with it so as not to pose a threat to the environment?

First and foremost, you need to make sure that the waste is as small as possible. And what to do with the waste that we have already produced? It's best to try to use them. We should recycle waste that can not be used and then dispose of it.

If waste poses a threat, examples are copper, zinc or tin compounds or asbestos - they can not be mixed with other wastes. They must be carefully separated and then disposed of for recycling.

Ecological materials

To be able to name a construction "ecological", we must, of course, use ecological materials. What are these raw materials?

One of the basic ecological raw materials is of course wood. In recent years, we return to wooden structures more and more often. One of the unquestionable advantages of wooden houses is that they maintain a natural thermoregulation. In the house made of wood in the summer there is a pleasant coolness, and in the winter it is quite warm, if of course it has been properly sealed. Humidity in wooden houses is also close to the ideal. When building a wooden house, there is also a small amount of waste, and those that arise are easy to use.

A natural, healthy material is also brick. However, you should pay attention to what it was made of. Not all types of bricks are ecological. The healthiest were made of clay with sawdust (they should not contain ashes). Brick houses are characterized by good insulation and are very durable.

Ecological materials should also be chosen when covering the roof. Of course, any asbestos-containing boards should be avoided. Also, sheet metal is not one of ecological materials. The most environmentally friendly are ceramic tiles or products made of sand and calcium.

And what about thermal insulation? Friendly, recycled materials such as cellulose insulation are available on the market. It is made of recycled paper and impregnated with salt compounds, thanks to which it is resistant to microorganisms and is difficult to burn. It also does not cause allergies and does not retain moisture. It is therefore particularly suitable for insulating wooden houses.

We should also remember about ecology when creating an electrical installation. In recent years, solar collectors or household windmills with power generators became very popular. They allow you to save exorbitant amounts on electricity consumed at home.

Sample prices of ecological and non-ecological materials

NON-ECOLOGICAL MATERIALS

ECOLOGICAL MATERIALS

Concrete blocks

from PLN 2/piece

Clay blocks

from PLN 2,5/piece

Sheet metal tile

from PLN 45/m2

Ceramic tile

from PLN 54/m2

Glass wool

from PLN 40/m2

Cellulose insulation

from PLN 20/m2

As we can see, ecological materials tend to be more expensive than non-organic materials, but it is not a rule! Remember that ecology and economy go hand in hand. The less water, electricity and materials we use during construction, the better for the environment - and for our pocket! If you have other ideas that will make the construction or renovation more ecological - share in the commentary.
