Cellulose insulation - how the recycled paper has become the highest quality insulation.

Cellulose wool, or cellulose fiber, is a material that appeared in the United States and western European countries as early as the seventies of the last century. Two decades later it came to Poland, where it gains more and more popularity every year. Why? This you will learn below!

How is cellulose wool formed?

Cellulose insulation is made from recycled paper - it is therefore cheap, and obtaining material for its production is very easy.

Upon arrival in the factory, the paper goes to a special shredder, which tears it for elements no more than 5 cm big, and a very strong electromagnet ensures that no metal element gets into the product.

In the next stage, the paper goes to another shredder, which tears it into 5 mm elements, and then these pieces are sprayed with boric acid, which fights molds and fungi, repels bark beetles and other insects, and most importantly – is a natural flame retardant.

Then a sample of cellulose insulation is subjected to several flammability tests in the manufacturing company and external companies. Due to the fact that it is simply made of paper, great emphasis is placed on it. But do not worry - insulation has no right to ignite - you'll find out soon.

Below you can see an episode of the popular program "How it's made" and learn more about how cellulose insulation is made:

Advantages of cellulose insulation

  • The flame retardance

The most important feature of cellulose insulation is the mixing of paper scraps with flame retardant boric acid. Consequently, it does not burn with an open fire, and the inflammatory tests that pass guarantee that the heat-treated insulation after an hour does not reduce its weight by more than 15%. This means that the insulation placed on the walls or on the roof will protect the wooden constructions against fire.

  • Ecology and savings

Cellulose insulation is a product made of paper, and therefore highly ecological, recycled material. What's more, the transformation of the raw material into the final product does not require any activity dangerous to the environment (such as burning), and the same time of use of electrical equipment for the production of the final material is not more than 5 minutes.

This means that by choosing celulose to insulate your home, you contribute to the protection of such an environment that is so important to all of us. What's more, thanks to the low price of raw material and simple processing - the final price of the product is very low. You can save money and use it for other stages of construction, and in addition you gain excellent product properties, about which below.

  • Technical parameters

The heat transfer coefficient λ for cellulose fibers is from 0.042 to 0.036, which is almost identical to styrofoam or mineral insulation.

30 cm thick cellulose insulation insulation will provide U heat transfer coefficient of about 0.18. A 15 cm thick layer will give a U-value of around 0.28. Such thermal insulation properties retains up to 12% of the own humidity level.

This means that cellulose insulation has excellent thermal insulation properties and density, thanks to which, with a small layer thickness, you can obtain the highest quality insulation. It is also worth getting acquainted with the comparison of the properties of cellulose insulation with polyurethane foam insulation:

Application of cellulose insulation

Cellulose insulation is well suited for insulating ceilings, pitched roofs and walls. Due to its physical properties, it is a loose product, which is not applied from the roll or bits (like mineral insulation), it is only blown using a special machine, directly from the bags.

Thanks to this, the material goes into the tightest fissures and tightly fills all the necessary surfaces. A huge plus of blowing the insulation is the lack of insulation material loss - the whole goes to the right place. In traditional insulation with mineral insulation, the loss is usually about 10%.

To sum up - cellulose insulation is a safe and ecological material that will save you money and time, while maintaining the best thermal insulation properties.
